Good news for Indian travellers to Heathrow

Here's hope for anyone and that's just about everyone flying into Heathrow from Delhi or Mumbai, only to be faced with inevitably long security queues, flight delays and chaotic baggage retrieval. Come April, all Indian flights on Britain's national carrier will fly into — and out of — Terminal 5, the snazziest and roomiest new addition to one of the world's busiest airports.
A sneak preview, exclusively afforded to TOI, reveals some of the hidden features of an airport terminal so vast it can fit 50 football pitches over its five floors; so high it provides views on a clear day of Windsor Castle and Wembley Stadium miles away and the first airport Prada store in Europe and the US.
But Terminal 5, which boasts it can handle 35 million passengers or half Heathrow's entire current capacity, is being touted as more than just a convenient, clean and cleverly-designed gateway to and from Britain.
Nick Ziebland, retail director for Terminal 5 at BAA, the company that runs Britain's largest airports, believes this new European travel hub, which will locate all British Airways short-haul and long-haul flights under the same roof, will "bring back the glamour of flying".

Willie Walsh loves being CEO

A terrible time for Willie Walsh the BA CEO.?  What with the worst baggage handling record, New York transatlantic route under increasing competition and threat, fines for price fixing, industrial disputes, who would want his job?  Well Willie of course, quote "I love being CEO, you get all the credit and then get to blame others when things go wrong".

"Heathrow is currently stretched to its limits." Built for approx 45 million passengers a year, yet over 70 million passengers annually endure its crowded terminals and long queues.

Airlines wait longer for gates to clear, and the baggage-handling is old and malfunctions a lot.  This of course all exacerbates BA's problems and reputation.  So although the opening of the new terminal cannot ease runway congestion it may make BA look better to passengers.  BA have shifted virtually all it's operations to T5 and will begin business there next spring.  We await the joy of a pleasant fast track, safe luggage journey.  However, I have a feeling that we may pay for this with our pockets.
